2023 Program / Classes

Upcoming classes are pictured below. Click on an image for a more detailed class description and supply list. All classes start promptly at 9 AM. Classes are held in back of the main meeting room. Doors open at 8:30.
You must reserve a spot to attend a class. There is a fee for most classes. To reserve a spot in a class contact Karen Morris kbmorrisnc@gmail.com.
Minimum Requirements for taking a class include:

Knowledge of the operation of your sewing machine.

Your machine cleaned, threaded, and bobbins wound.

Ability to sew an accurate ¼ seam.

Ability to use a rotary cutter and ruler to cut fabric to an accurate measurement as needed for the class project

Oct. 19, Marianne Gilbert, English Paper Piecing 1
Maryanne Gilbert will teach a 2-part class for those interested in learning English Paper Piecing. Part 1 is an introduction to this hand sewing technique where you will learn how to start a Grandmother’s Flower Garden item (pillow, table topper, quilt) which will be completed later in your own time. Maryanne will get you started but you will not finish the project in class. This is an opportunity for you to try something new and then decide if you want to keep going with Part 2.

Nov. 9, Darla Harlacher, Tie-One-On Apron
National Tie One On Day is a day for celebrating baked love every year on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving Eve, apron-wearers all over America share some love with someone around them with a loaf of bread and an apron. We will be making an apron to Tie On as we prepare for the Thanksgiving feast.

Oct. 19, Marianne Gilbert, English Paper 2
Part 2 of the class will be taught the same day. You MUST have attended Part 1 to move into Part 2 and you must bring all supplies listed. This is where you will learn how to fussy cut and piece a table runner. Topics include drawing templates and dividing them, basic fussy cutting, and piecing diamonds and other shapes.

Jan 12, 2023, Barb Jones, Decoupage
Come have a fun time with Barb Jones as she shares her love of decoupage. Bring an item (box, vase, suitcase, trunk, storage container, Barbie doll (?), etc.) to decorate with your scraps of tissue paper, fabric, magazine cutouts, photos, maps, dressmaker patterns, etc. Let your imagination run wild! Not only is this sure to be an adventure into your creative side, Barb has promised a special prize to the person who brings the most unusual/interesting item as their project.

Jan. 19, Margo and Mary, Machine Binding Basics
After spending much time and money creating your beautiful quilt top, it deserves a grand finish. some polish, if you will. That’s the role of the binding. But if you feel your binding skills are in need of a little improvement…Mary and Margo are here to help! They will demo how to make a perfect binding using the Creative Grids Folded Corner Clipper ruler and then show you all the tips on how to make your binding smooth, even and with perfect (or nearly perfect) mitered corners. This is a free class and the supplies are free too!

Feb. 9, 2023, Louisa Jordan, Chandelier
Louisa Jordan will show us how to make this beautiful quilt that uses 2 sizes of squares (6” and 3”) to make 18 blocks that are set on point. Your color choice can be planned or scrappy. If you pre-cut your fabrics, you should be able to finish the quilt top in the class.
Supplies:
• Machine with ¼” foot or markings
• Thread
• Rulers
o One to square block to 10 ½ “
o One triangle to make side insets and corners or one with 45-degree angle on 1 at least 12” long with a 45-degree mark.
• Scissors and rotary cutter
• Recommend a flannel back tablecloth or something for a design wall
• Other regular quilting supplies including machine
Pre-work:
See attached for cutting instructions. If you pre-cut your fabrics, you should be able to finish the quilt top in class.

The Freelancer quilt is made with the Wedge Star™ tool, which will be purchased in the class or can be rented during the class for $10. The tool is designed to make a variety of different blocks based on 45º sub-units, ranging from simple kaleidoscope blocks to complex stars with diamond points going north, south, east and west.
The Freelancer project can truly be yours; just change the size and coloring to make a spectacular project as unique as you are. The quilt size and fabric yardage will, of course, depend on the size blocks you choose.

March 16, Darla Harlacher, Jewel Box
Join Darla Harlacher as she teaches us how to make this striking quilt. The color possibilities are endless. Your palette can be planned or scrappy.

Supplies:
1 – 12” X 20” fabric for outside (fat quarters will work)
1 – 12” X 20” fabric for inside
1 - 12” X 20” fusible batting or regular batting
Thread to match fabric
1 - 16 to 20” zipper
Lynne will have lacy zippers (in assorted colors) available for purchase prior to class for $1 each
Pre-work required before class:
Layer fusible batting on the back of the outside fabric and fuse following manufacturer’s directions.

Melissa Wells will walk us through this fun method that involves taking rectangular pieces of fabric that have nearly identical motif prints to make the Stack, then Whack (cutting) pieces from this Stack and arranging them to create a kaleidoscope effect.

July 20, Lou Veverka, Crazy Christmas Tree
Add some fun to your Christmas décor with this fun and wonky table runner. Lou Veverka will
teach us how to step into the forest of misshapen trees as we celebrate Christmas in July. The
pattern must be purchased and brought to class and is available from multiple online sources

August 10, Joanne Shropshire, Oh My Stars
Join Joanne Shropshire to make this star quilt using 2 ½” strips and a light and a dark accent
fabric. We will have fun making these spinning stars and seeing what everyone’s star blocks
look like. The block goes together pretty fast so you should get a lot finished in class. Each
block is made using 4 strips from 1 color family

Sept. 14, 2023, Karen Morris, Braid Quilt
Karen Morris will walk you through the cutting and ‘braiding’ of 2 ½” strips to make a quilt of your chosen size, from baby to king. The piecing is easier than it looks. All sizes can be made with just 1 jellyroll (40 pre-cut and packaged strips). If you decide to make a baby or lap size quilt, you can share a jellyroll with a friend (1 jellyroll will yield 2 of the smaller quilts!). Or you can bring your own pre-cut strips.
The pattern includes the cutting template and must be purchased and brought to class. The pattern is available from various sources online.
