2020 Mystery Quilt

Approximate size: 70" x 84"

Join Brenda Call as she helps us create a 70" by 84" mystery quilt.

 

In January, Brenda presented the fabric requirements for the quilt. Each month, generally on the third Thursday, Brenda will add a new clue to guide us in creating our quilt. Our final clue will be given in September and on October 22 we will have our quilt reveal.

QUILT ASSEMBLY

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS:  To print these requirements, click HERE.

MAIN QUILT BODY

  • 1 yard light fabric
     

  • 2 ½ (2.25) yards medium to large scale bold print with medium background
     

  • 1 yard dark fabric – this could be a solid
     

  • 1 ½ (1.5) yards of medium contrast fabric – pick a color from your bold print

 

BORDERS

 

  • Border #1: 2/3 yards of light fabric. (If you are using the same fabric as the light fabric in your quilt you will need a total of 1 2/3 yards total light.
     

  • Border #2: 1 1/3 yards large scale bold print. (If you are using the same bold fabric as above you will need a total of 3 2/3 yards total.

 

BINDING: 2/3 yards

MYSTERY QUILT CLUE #1    To print these instructions, click HERE.

 

CUT:

 

            Contrast Fabric:          Cut 8 strips @ 4” x WOF

            Bold Fabric:                Cut 8 strips @ 4” x WOF

 

SEW:

 

With right sides together sew 1 contrast strip and 1 bold strip together along the length of the strip.  Press to the bold fabric.  Repeat 7 more times to have a total of 8 strips sets.  Sub cut your strips every 4 inches.  Need 80 units.

CUT:

 

            Light Fabric:               Cut 3 strips @ 4” x WOF

  

SEW:

 

No sewing this clue.  Sub cut your above strips into 2 ¼” units.  You need  40 units.

            Contrast Fabric:          Cut 5 strips @ 2 1/4” x WOF

            Bold Fabric:                Cut 5 strips @ 2 1/4” x WOF

 

 

SEW:

 

With right sides together sew 1 contrast strip and 1 bold strip together along the length of the strip.  Press to the bold fabric.  Repeat 4 more times to have a total of 5 strips sets.  Sub cut your strips every 2 ¼” inches.  Need 80 units.

 

With right sides together sew two units together to form a four-patch.  Spiral your seams when pressing.  Repeat for a total of 40 four-patches.

CUT:

 

            Bold Fabric:                Cut 7 strips @ 2 1/4” x WOF

            Dark Fabric:                Cut 7 strips @ 2 1/4” x WOF

 

 

SEW:

 

With right sides together sew 1 contrast strip and 1 bold strip together along the length of the strip.  Press to the bold fabric.  Repeat 6 more times to have a total of 7 strips sets.  Sub cut your strips every 2 ¼” inches.  Need 120 units.

 

With right sides together sew two units together to form a four-patch.  Spiral your seams when pressing.  Repeat for a total of 60 four-patches.

CUT:

 

            Bold Fabric:                Cut 3 strips @ 2 1/4” x WOF

            Light Fabric:               Cut 3 strips @ 4” x WOF

            Dark Fabric:                Cut 3 strips @ 2 ¼” x WOF

 

SEW:

 

With right sides together sew 1 bold strip to 1 light strip along the length of the strip.  Press to the light fabric. With right sides together sew 1 contrast strip to 1 light/bold combo strip along the length of the light strip.  Press to the light fabric.   Repeat 2 more times to have a total of 3 strips sets.  Sub cut your strips every 2 ¼” inches.  Need 40 units.

GATHER:

 

            Clue #2

            Clue #4 – 20 units

            Clue #5

Right sides together, sew 1 clue #2 to each side of Clue #4.  Tip:  Make sure your four-patch unit is oriented so the dark fabric squares are in the top right and bottom left.  Press out to the light rectangles.

Right sides together sew 1 clue #5 to the top and bottom of the above Clue 2/Clue 4 combo unit.  Tip:  Make sure your dark squares on your #5 clue are at the top right and bottom left.  Press out towards the #5 clues.  (Pay no attention to the arrows in the picture.)  You should have 20 completed units when done.

GSQ members, we are ready to complete our Mystery Quilts. If you weren’t sure you wanted to make a MYSTERY quilt, take a look at the picture of Brenda’s quilt at the end of the attached instructions. You might just want to make it now. Her instructions are accurate and clear. 

 

Following are the instructions to assemble your blocks and complete your mystery quilt. We want to have our final reveal of our quilts on October 1. Please send pictures of your completed quilt to Mary Harrigan at maharrig67@gmail.com. We will post pictures of all the quilts on our Facebook page and also on our website.

MAKING YOUR BLOCKS

 

Gather all your clues together and sew lay them out as shown in picture below.  Take care and make sure you lay them all out the same way (ask me how I know this!!)

Assembly

Press the top and bottom rows in towards the middle combo unit.  Press the middle row out towards the  combo unit.  Your completed block should measure 14 1/2”.

QUILT  TOP CONSTRUCTION, 4 X 5

Sew five rows with four blocks in each row.  Press the top, middle and bottom rows towards the left and press the 2nd and 4th rows towards the right.  Sew all rows together and press towards the odd numbers rows.

BORDERS

Border #1:  Light Fabric – Cut 7 strips 2 ¼” x WOF

 

Border #2:  Bold Fabric – Cut 8 strips 6” x WOF (7 might work but it just eeeks it out) 

 

Measure and sew borders to sides first and then top and bottom.  Pressing out towards each border as you add them.
